How do I calculate cubic yards for gravel, mulch, or concrete?+
Formula: Length (ft) Γ— Width (ft) Γ— Depth (ft) Γ· 27. Depth must be in feet β€” convert inches by dividing by 12. Example: a 20Γ—30 ft driveway at 4 inches of gravel = 20 Γ— 30 Γ— (4Γ·12) Γ· 27 = 7.4 cubic yards. Always add 10% for waste and settling β€” order 8.2 yards. How do I measure and calculate roof pitch?+
Roof pitch is expressed as rise-over-run β€” how many inches the roof rises per 12 inches of horizontal run. To measure: hold a level horizontally against the roof, mark 12 inches along the level, then measure the vertical distance from that 12-inch mark down to the roof surface β€” that's your rise. A roof that rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of run is a 6/12 pitch. Pitch determines the pitch multiplier (factor applied to plan area to get actual roof area), rafter length, and which roofing materials are suitable. How many steps do I need for a staircase and what's the correct riser height?+
IRC 2021 requires: maximum riser height of 7ΒΎ inches, minimum tread depth of 10 inches, and all risers within β…œ inch of each other (no inconsistent steps). To calculate: divide total floor-to-floor height by your target riser height (try 7 inches), round to the nearest whole number of risers, then divide total rise by that number to find exact riser height. Example: 9 ft floor-to-floor = 108 inches Γ· 7 = 15.4 β†’ 15 risers β†’ 108 Γ· 15 = 7.2 inch riser height (within code). What slope is required for drainage away from a house foundation?+
IRC requires the ground to drop at least 6 inches within the first 10 feet from the foundation β€” a 5% grade minimum.
