Stop Guessing โ€” Calculate Exactly What You Need

The most common and expensive mistake in any construction or renovation project is material estimation error. Order too little and you're making mid-project emergency runs โ€” or worse, ordering a second batch of tile or paint from a different production lot that doesn't match the first. Order too much and you're paying for material that goes in the dumpster.

Our 25 material calculators eliminate guesswork by applying the same formulas used by contractors, structural engineers, and building material suppliers. Every calculator accounts for waste โ€” concrete gets 10%, tile gets 10โ€“20% depending on layout, rebar gets 10% for cuts โ€” because the right quantity is never the theoretical minimum.

Each calculator is paired with 2026 US average pricing so you can move from "how much do I need" to "how much will it cost" in the same step. All calculators are free, run instantly in your browser, and are updated to current material standards and codes.

๐Ÿ’ก How to Use These Calculators

Start with the material that matches your project โ€” concrete for slabs and footings, rebar for reinforcement, gravel for base layers. Use our measurement tools first if you need to calculate your area or volume before ordering. Then check our cost estimators for the full installed project budget.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about calculating construction and landscaping materials.
How much concrete do I need for a slab?+
Use the formula: Length ร— Width ร— (Thickness in inches รท 12) รท 27 = cubic yards. A 20ร—20 ft slab at 4 inches thick = 20 ร— 20 ร— (4รท12) รท 27 = 4.9 cubic yards. Always order 10% extra โ€” a short pour mid-job creates a cold joint (structural weak point). Use our Concrete Calculator for an instant result including bag equivalents and ready-mix vs bags comparison.
How much gravel do I need per square foot?+
At 2 inches deep, 1 ton of crushed stone covers approximately 100 sq ft. At 4 inches deep, 1 ton covers about 50 sq ft. Coverage varies by stone type โ€” pea gravel (100 lbs/cu ft) spreads further than crusher run (110 lbs/cu ft). Use our Gravel Calculator to get tons and cubic yards based on your exact area and depth with the correct density for your chosen stone type.
How many gallons of paint do I need for a room?+
One gallon covers approximately 350โ€“400 sq ft for one coat. A standard 12ร—12 ft room with 9 ft ceilings has roughly 360 sq ft of wall area (after deducting 1 door and 1 window). For two coats, you need approximately 2 gallons. Rough or textured surfaces reduce coverage by 20โ€“30%. Use our Paint Calculator for an exact estimate based on your room dimensions, surface type, and number of coats.
How many bags of grout do I need for tile?+
Grout quantity depends on tile size and joint width. For 12ร—12 inch tiles with โ…› inch joints: approximately 0.5 lbs per sq ft โ€” a 100 sq ft floor needs about 50 lbs (3 bags of 20 lb). Smaller tiles or wider joints use significantly more grout โ€” 4ร—4 tiles with โ…›" joints need ~1.5 lbs/sq ft. Always buy 10โ€“15% extra to avoid a lot-mismatch on a second purchase. Use our Grout Calculator for an exact bag count with cost estimate by grout type.
How many pallets of sod do I need?+
A standard pallet of sod covers approximately 450 sq ft. Divide your lawn area by 450 and round up. For a 2,000 sq ft lawn: 2,000 รท 450 = 4.4 โ†’ order 5 pallets. Add 5% for irregular edges and cuts. Coverage varies by supplier and grass type โ€” always confirm with your supplier before ordering. Use our Sod Calculator with your specific grass type for an accurate pallet count and cost estimate.
How much insulation do I need for my attic?+
Measure your attic's floor area (length ร— width). The DOE recommends R-49 to R-60 for most US attics (Climate Zones 4โ€“7). With blown-in cellulose at R-3.5 per inch, you need approximately 14 inches of insulation to reach R-49. With fiberglass batts at R-3.1 per inch, that's about 15โ€“16 inches. Always check your current insulation depth first โ€” you may only need to add a top-up layer. Use our Insulation Calculator for your climate zone R-value recommendation and bag count.
How much rebar do I need for a concrete slab?+
For standard #4 rebar at 12 inches on center in a two-way grid, you need approximately 2 linear feet of rebar per square foot of slab. A 20ร—20 ft driveway (400 sq ft) needs roughly 840 linear feet before the 10% waste buffer โ€” about 46 bars of 20 ft rebar to order. Spacing, bar size, and lap splice requirements all affect the final count. Use our Rebar Calculator for an exact linear footage, bar count, weight, and material cost estimate.
