Board feet measure lumber volume: 1 BF = 1" thick × 12" wide × 12" long (144 cu in). Always add 10–15% for waste and defects.

How to Calculate Board Feet

A board foot (BF) is a unit of lumber volume equal to a piece of wood 1 inch thick × 12 inches wide × 12 inches long (144 cubic inches). It's the standard unit for pricing hardwood lumber at sawmills, lumber yards, and woodworking suppliers.

Formula:

Board Feet = (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) ÷ 12

💡 Important Note

Board feet use the nominal dimensions of lumber, not the actual milled dimensions. A 1×6 board is nominally 1 inch thick × 6 inches wide, but actually measures 0.75" × 5.5". Always calculate board feet using the nominal (listed) dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a board foot?+
A board foot (BF) is a unit of lumber volume equal to 1 inch thick × 12 inches wide × 12 inches long = 144 cubic inches. It's used to price and measure hardwood lumber. Calculate it as: (Thickness inches × Width inches × Length feet) ÷ 12.
How many board feet in a 2×4×8?+
A 2×4 board 8 feet long contains (2 × 4 × 8) ÷ 12 = 5.33 board feet. A 2×4 that is 12 feet long contains 8 board feet. Note: use nominal dimensions (2×4), not actual dimensions (1.5×3.5) when calculating board feet.
When do I use board feet vs linear feet?+
Use board feet when buying hardwood lumber sold by volume (furniture wood, custom millwork, exotic species). Use linear feet when buying dimensional softwood lumber (framing studs, trim, decking) sold by the piece or length. Home improvement stores sell most lumber by the piece, not by the board foot.
How do I calculate board feet for a project?+
List all pieces needed with their nominal thickness, width, and length. Calculate BF for each piece using (T × W × L) ÷ 12. Add all pieces together, then add 15% for waste and defects.
How accurate is this board feet calculator?+
Very accurate when using nominal lumber dimensions. The formula (Thickness × Width × Length) ÷ 12 is the industry-standard method for calculating board feet. Always use nominal dimensions — not the actual milled size — for correct results.
