This tile calculator estimates the number of tiles needed for any floor or wall area based on your room dimensions, tile size, grout joint, layout pattern, and waste factor. It works for floors, walls, backsplashes, showers, and any other tiled surface.

Every tile job produces waste from cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. A 10% waste factor means for every 100 sq ft of floor, you buy 110 sq ft of tile. Porcelain is fired at higher temperatures making it denser, harder, and less porous than ceramic. Porcelain is suitable for floors, showers, outdoor areas, and freeze-thaw climates. Ceramic is better suited for walls and light-traffic floors where budget is a priority. For any wet area or floor, choose porcelain with a PEI rating of 3 or higher.

Grout Types:
- Unsanded grout β for joints under β inch. Used with polished stone and glass tiles where sanded grout would scratch the surface.
- Sanded grout β for joints β inch and wider. The sand adds bulk and strength to prevent cracking in wider joints.
- Epoxy grout β stain-proof, waterproof, chemical resistant. Best for kitchens, commercial, and shower floors. More expensive and harder to work with.
- Furan grout β industrial use only. Highly chemical resistant.
Always seal cementitious grout (sanded and unsanded) after it cures β typically 72 hours after installation. Epoxy grout does not need sealing. Re-seal grout annually in showers and every 2β3 years on floors. Unsealed grout stains easily and allows water penetration behind tiles.

Buying & Layout Tips
Before You Buy
- Buy from the same lot number β tile color and shade varies between production lots. Buy all tiles needed for the project from the same lot. You can usually order more from the same lot within 6β12 months β ask your supplier about lot availability.
- Order all materials at once β tile, grout, adhesive/thinset, and grout sealer. Running back to the store mid-project is a common cause of delays.
- Check for PEI rating on floor tiles β PEI 1β2 for walls only, PEI 3 for light residential floors, PEI 4 for heavy residential and commercial, PEI 5 for commercial heavy traffic.
- Acclimate tile β store tiles in the room where they'll be installed for 24β48 hours before laying, especially for natural stone.
Layout Tips
- Find the center of the room first β snap chalk lines from the midpoint of opposite walls to find the center point. Start laying from the center outward so cut tiles are equal on both sides.
- Dry lay first β lay out tiles dry (no adhesive) from center to walls to check your layout before committing. Adjust center point if cuts are less than half a tile wide.
- Use tile spacers β spacers ensure consistent joint width throughout the installation. Remove spacers before grout cures.
- Back-butter large format tiles β for tiles 15 inches or larger, apply thinset to both the floor and the back of the tile for full coverage.
